Hamamelis

The witch hazels are the most distinct and beautiful small trees. The curious spider-like flowers appear on the leafless branches from early winter to early spring and the hazel-like foliage is usually most attractively coloured in the autumn. They prefer moisture retentive, neutral or slightly acid soils, but can grow over chalk as long as the soil is deep.
