Olives

Olives have been cultivated since at least 3000BC - the olive branch appears in the Old Testament as a symbol of peace. The tree is beautiful in every respect: its leaves are silvery-grey and shiny and its trunk is grey and gnarled. Olive trees are sub-tropical. They can happily spend the summer months outside on the patio but in colder regions they should be brought into a cold greenhouse or conservatory to overwinter (the temperature must not fall below -3°C). They require a sunny position if the fruit is to ripen properly.
