This outstanding early blackcurrant variety is available as a half standard and produces shiny black fruits that are over double the size of standard blackcurrants, but with a much sweeter flavour making them suitable for picking and eating fresh, straight off of the bush.  ‘Big Ben’ crops extremely heavily from late June/July and was bred at the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI).  It shows good resistance to both mildew and leaf spot and has recently been awarded the coveted ‘Award of Garden Merit’ by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Half standards have a main stem length of approximately 60cm [2ft]. They have several advantages over conventional low bush forms; they are more attractive looking and since they bear their fruit well above ground level they are easier to manage and pick. They also take up less ground space, since the area beneath the bush can be utilised by low growing annuals or herbs. This is clearly an important consideration in a small garden. Half-standards should be planted 1.2-1.5m (4-5ft) apart.

Available for despatch from late November/December until late March.

Please note - Half-standard blackcurrants should be staked throughout their life.   We also strongly recommend the use of rootgrow™ when planting to encourage strong root growth and aid establishment.
